About

The Fyr is devoted to poetry and stories that represent in spirit and aspire to the accomplishments of the great poets, the bards of Old English and Middle English alliterative epics like Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the even more fruitful, the history of verse represented in the individual works of poets best summarized by Harold Bloom’s great book “The Best Poems of the English Language.”

In short, we love works (and who does not) that relay in beautiful language the shared myths, legends, traditions and beliefs of our culture, renewed literary creation, not deconstructed in some academic exercise. We are searching for either established myth or mythopoeic beauty pointing to the good in an age where much in contemporary life has turned away, knowingly or not, from these necessary gifts. We hold firmly to the belief that form remains a vital means for their expression, capable of conveying both intellectual precision and emotional depth.

Our purpose is to provide a welcoming home for poets and writers who practice a timeless, mythic, spiritual or mythopoeic craft. We seek to publish work that demonstrates technical effort while speaking to ageless human experience. We champion writing that honors our history yet remains vibrantly universal and forward looking.

What We Publish

We welcome original, previously unpublished poems and tales in formalist, classical and traditional forms. In addition to poetry and tales, we also welcome thoughtful essays and criticism or reviews of any media, place or persons of interest. Just email your proposed article to editor@thefyr.review
