Odyssey*

Failing, they sailed upon the acrid sea
And whirled about a chasm fraught with fears
Of conjured death that sanguine creatures see
O mourning minds who’d sought immortal seers

Among the hoary roots of strife unfurled
Under the mountained earth and bounded seas
In fires and freezing airs that shape the world
For prayers the goddess hears are silent pleas

That beauty lives in strife and life’s release
Ere time’s reborn, renewed by perfect dreams
In glory’s waning tide, or love’s increase
O tend thou mortal soul what beauty seems

Reflected here upon a shadowed world
Among the bloodied fields of strife unfurled
